Our Beginnings
Missionary Aviation Repair Center is a mission service organization based in Soldotna, Alaska. MARC was founded in 1964, but the story of Missionary Aviation Repair Center really began before that.
In 1945, Roald and Harriett Amundsen began serving with the Evangelical Covenant Mission in Nome, Alaska as pastor and missionary pilot.
Early on, Roald saw the need for consistent maintenance for the safety of the numerous mission aircraft used across Alaska.
God instilled in the Amundsen's hearts the vision to begin MARC as an organized aviation maintenance facility for Alaskan missions. They chose to locate at the Soldotna airport because of the ease of accessibility to inexpensive fuel and parts. They began with a small hangar for maintenance, but God had more in store for MARC Within a year, God provided a Cessna 180 and led them to provide not only quality maintenance, but also safe, efficient, and economical transportation for missionaries who did not have their own aircraft. Our time here hasn't gone unchallenged though. In 1982, a fire destroyed our hangar and office. Thankfully, God provided our present facilities through volunteer labor and many generous donations. Volunteers continue to be an invaluable asset to us. Summer internships for missionaries in training, people giving their vacation time to the Lord, and "retired" individuals bridge the gap when we are short handed or extra busy.
Over the years, we have continued to expand in staff, facilities, and aircraft. We now have now have a staff of nine families with another staff member raising support, a hangar with offices and space for maintenance, and a new hangar to keep our airplanes in. Because of few roads in Alaska, many people and villages depend on airplanes for transportation, and we attempt to meet this need through our flight department.
